Weekly Objectives 09/25/17

 

Vocabulary words this week are common educational words.  The following words are important for all Middle School students to know, understand and use.  Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis, Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Infer, Compare, Support, Elaborate.  Check out the Vocabulary link on the side of this page, for future word lists.

 Standards: Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: L6.4, L6.5, L6.6, L7.4, and 7.5, L7.6 and L8.4, L8.5 L8.6

6th grade English:  Students will learn the “common educational” definitions of the vocabulary words and discuss their use in other core classes. Reading textbooks, reference articles and mentor text, students will discover strategies authors use as they write informative text.  The students will use the text structures and strategies when writing Informative or Persuasive text. Vocab cards are due on Mondays and the Vocab test will be on Thursdays. The first test is on Thursday, 09/28.

CCSS: W6.1, W6.2, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6 and 6.10, and Language 6.1, 6.2, 6.3

7th Grade: Students will learn the “common educational” definitions of the vocabulary words and discuss their use in other core classes. Students will review the stages of the writing process, adding them to their learning logs.  The students will demonstrate their knowledge of revision as they revise and peer review their Hero Biographies. The final copies are due on Wednesday.    The students develop skills in summarizing as they learn to find the overall main idea, and main points of NEWSELA articles, writing summaries after they read.  Vocab cards are due on Mondays and the Vocab test will be on Thursdays. The first test is on Thursday, 09/28/17.

CCSS: Writing 7.4, 7.5, 7.6, 7.10 and Language 7.1, 7.2, 7.3

8th Grade: Quick change in plans last week, instead of working on blogs, students worked on learning to write good summaries. This week students will learn the “common educational” definitions of the vocabulary words and discuss their use in other core classes.  Students will discuss what a blog is, what is the purpose of blogging, blogging rules, and commenting rules. Students will discover writing for a larger audience. Students will complete a web quest exploring other blogs.  This will provide examples for students as they design and create their own blog.  The Blogs will be available for viewing online by family and friends, in a few weeks.  Once created the students will write on their blogs several times weekly.  Students will write their first blog post introducing themselves to their audience.  Vocab cards are due on Mondays and the Vocab test will be on Thursdays. The first test is on Thursday, 09/28/17.
